Gas Spring Replacement: Check Brackets Before Choosing Force

Updatetime:2026-10-27   Visits:1007

A replacement gas spring with the same printed force can behave differently when its mounting hardware has changed. Loose fasteners, worn hinges and a bent bracket can alter the load path or restrict movement. Before ordering, record the condition of the complete mechanism. LONGXIANG GAS SPRING recommends treating the spring, end fittings and mounting points as one application.

1. Secure the lid before inspection

Support the moving panel independently before removing any attachment. A worn spring may still contain pressure, and its remaining support can disappear when disconnected. Follow the equipment manufacturer's service procedure. Do not drill, heat or dismantle the gas spring, and do not rely on it as the only support during maintenance.

2. Look for movement where there should be none

Inspect bracket bases, fixing holes, fasteners and the surrounding panel. Look for cracks, elongated holes, corrosion, loose inserts or witness marks that show a bracket has shifted. Check the hinge for play and compare both sides of a paired installation. Photograph the mounting points before disturbing them so the original condition is documented.

A bracket that moves under load changes the spring's position relative to the hinge. Simply fitting a stronger spring can increase the load on already damaged hardware. Repair or replace defective mounting parts using the equipment manufacturer's specifications before assessing a replacement force.

3. Check alignment throughout the travel

With the panel safely supported, check that the end fittings can articulate without contacting nearby parts. Look for a tilted ball stud, distorted eyelet or a bracket that pulls the spring sideways. Gas springs are intended to work along their axis; binding and lateral loading can damage the rod or seals. Avoid using the spring to pull misaligned components into position.

For replacement hardware, review the available end fittings and brackets and confirm dimensions, articulation and load suitability for the application. A visually similar fitting is not automatically interchangeable.

4. Record geometry before selecting force

Measure the attachment centres, extended length and required movement using a consistent reference. Record the closed and open panel positions, mounting coordinates relative to the hinge, panel mass and centre of gravity where known. Include any added handles, insulation or accessories. These details help LONGXIANG GAS SPRING distinguish a force-selection issue from a changed installation.

Inspect the rod for scratches or bending, note the installed orientation, and record operating temperature when comparing behaviour. Temperature can affect extension force, while friction and geometry affect the effort felt by the user. Do not compare one cold mechanism with another warm mechanism and assume the difference proves leakage.

5. Validate the complete assembly

After the hardware condition and replacement specification are agreed, evaluate opening effort, controlled movement and clearance through the full travel. Confirm that the application does not force the gas spring beyond its permitted movement. Check paired units together rather than judging only one side. LONGXIANG GAS SPRING can review the application information alongside the selected lift gas spring requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Should I copy the old force marking?

Use it as a reference, together with the original part identification. Recheck the specification when panel weight, mounting geometry or hardware condition has changed.

Can a stronger spring compensate for a bent bracket?

No. Correct the damaged mounting arrangement first. Increasing force does not restore alignment or structural integrity.

Send LONGXIANG GAS SPRING the part markings, measurements and clear photographs through our contact page before ordering a replacement.
