A gas spring is designed to carry force along the centerline of its piston rod. When brackets, hinges or mounting points force the unit to bend sideways, side loading occurs. What Causes Side Loading?
Side loading usually begins with mounting geometry. The two ball studs or clevis pins may not sit on the same working plane, the hinge may be twisted, or a bracket may flex under load. In other cases, the gas spring touches a frame member as the lid moves. A connection can look aligned in the closed position but shift several millimeters at mid stroke.
Manufacturing tolerances also matter. Welded frames, molded panels and long hinges can introduce small dimensional differences between units. If the design has no allowance for these differences, the piston rod may be pushed sideways every cycle.
Why Side Load Damages a Gas Spring
The rod guide and seal are intended to support axial movement. A lateral force presses the rod against one side of the guide, raising contact pressure and wear.
